Take Action: Save California’s Children

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Yesterday, the California State Legislature passed a budget proposal along to the Governor that resolves the state deficit. But the Governor has threatened to veto any legislation that contain tax increases of any kind. In a recession, when unemployment is skyrocketing along with the demand for government programs and funding, the Governor is refusing to pass a budget with anything that increases state revenue through taxes. He is instead willing cut children’s health care and completely dismantle California’s public assistance system. To stay in good favor with the tobacco, auto and oil companies.

The fiscal year ends on the last day of this month…today. This means that if Arnold vetoes this budget today, he is sending our state into a new year with no budget, no funding and thus, no social services.

Instead, he proposes to entirely wipe out state-funded children’s health insurance and to enact other sweeping cuts to public assistance.

Take Action Now by calling or emailing the Governor and asking him to sign the budget and keep our vital social services in tact. You can call his office at (916) 445-2841 or (213) 897-0322 or email him here

We must step up and defend the lives of our children…

…and our mothers, and our fathers, and our disabled fellow-citizens, and our       brothers and sisters living with HIV/AIDS …

…and our homeless and our poor, and our public school students, and our middle class families…

…and our prisoners, and our seniors, and our working classes, and our farmworkers…

…and our teachers, and our government employees, and our public school teachers and professors…

…and our friends and family with cancer, and our college students…and did I mention our children?

It is not an exaggeration to say that virtually every Californian will suffer if Arnold vetoes this budget plan. This budget plan would prevent the most severe cuts and even keep a significant amount of money in reserve for future emergencies.

But a veto would force massive cuts to social services from health care for folks living with HIV/AIDS to health care for children in low-income families. It will likely result in slashing funding for low-income college students, making California the first state to cut financial aid while at the same time raising tuition. It could even result in having to put more animals to sleep by relaxing requirements on animal shelters. [For more information, visit DownWithTyranny.]

THESE CUTS ARE UNNECESSARY! And as a result, unjust and immoral, because lives will be lost that could otherwise be saved if vital social service programs are kept in place. I do not consent to my government willingly defending corporate interests and free-market fundamentalism at the expense of the lives of my fellow Californians and the future of our children

Please, call Governor Schwarzenegger’s office today at (916) 445-2841 or (213) 897-0322 or email him here. Ask the governor to sign this budget plan and protect our State from financial ruin.

Brave New Voices

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Check out this video of a performance called “Hir” by Alysia Harris and Aysha El Shamayleh at Brave New Voices, a teen slam-poetry festival.

I’ve watched it three times. I’ve cried each time.

This poem speaks to me…it almost speaks for me. The memories of the teenage “girl” in the baggy clothes, hoping not to be noticed because sometimes its better to be invisible than to be seen for something you’re not.

“Doesn’t paint her face because her whole body’s painted on”

“All he wishes for is to get to wear a tuxedo to prom”

“She was always that male beetle that everyone called a ‘ladybug’”

“God combined the two genders and put me in this body Transgendered”

“I’m here. Quit talking about me like I’m not here” or “I’m hir. Quit talking about me like I’m not here.”

This is genius. The second word could be taken to mean “here” or “hir.” ['Hir' is a gender-neutral pronoun that can be used in place of "his" and "her"]. The sentence could be saying “Quit treating me like i’m invisible” or “Quit using the wrong pronoun.” And when you think about it, sometimes those two meanings are basically one in the same. Being called “she” for years and decades when “he” is the only thing that ever feels right can leave you feeling like a shell of yourself; like nobody sees the real you.

“James falls back into Melissa’s Skin, and the two comfort each other with their syncapated heart beats. Waiting for the day when Melissa can finally scrub off this made up genetic make up, when the teacher asks for James, and he can finally say “i’m here.”

Thank you, Alysia and Aysha, for using your gifts as poets to tell our stories so well and with such passion. This is such an important form of activism – making our stories known so that one day we can all finally say, “I’m here.”

Honoring Stonewall: Transgender Day of Action

Friday, June 26th, 2009

180px-stonewall_inn_1969The Stonewall Riots occurred 40 years ago this Sunday in Greenwich Village, New York. They were sparked by one of many late-night police raids and erupted into a powerful and spontaneous resistance against years of abuse of LBGT folk by police officers. Although this fact is often forgotten, the Stonewall resistance was lead by Trans and gender non-conforming people and homeless youth.

As a 26 year old Transgender man, I am grateful for the courage and sacrifice of those who came before me. And I am proud of today’s activists and organizers that are continuing the spirit of uncompromising resistance to the forces of transphobia, racism, poverty, homophobia, and genderism.finalfrontdoa09frontpalmcard-21

One of these organizations is the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, located in New York City. On Friday, June 26, SRLP and their supporters will pound the pavement for Trans Day of Action 2009.

On June 26, 2009, Trans and Gender Non Conforming (TGNC) People of Color and allies will take to the streets of NYC once again and demand justice to let the world know, that on the 40th anniversary of Stonewall, the rebellion is not over and we will continue fighting for justice, raising our voices until we are heard.

As a white Transman, this energizes and heals me and calls to me to take action and never be content until every member of our diverse communities is free from discrimination, harassment and hate violence, and empowered to be true to ourselves and our families, however we choose to define them.

To endorse the Transgender Day of Action, email endorsetdoa@alp.org. For more information about the march and rally, visit the Silvia Rivera Law Project or email info4tdoa@alp.org.

The web announcement also displays the TDOA points of unity, which are a must-read. Before laying out the 11 points of unity, SRLP beings with:

As TGNC People of Color (POC) we recognize the importance of working together alongside other movements to build the world we want to see. Much has changed since last year’s TDOA, the election of a new US President has brought hope to many of our communities, however we still live in a time when people of color, immigrants, youth, elders, rural communities, people living with disabilities and poor people are disproportionately underserved, face higher levels of discrimination, heightened surveillance and experience increased violence at the hands of the state. In fact, due to the growing financial crisis conditions have worsened. As a result, it is even more critical that we unite and work together towards ending the transphobia, racism, classism, sexism, ageism, ableism, homophobia and xenophobia within our movements for justice. We call for an end to the continued single issue platform of gay marriage over TGNC justice by our movements. Let’s come together to let the world know that TGNC justice will not be undermined and together we will not be silenced!

This event and the communities and values behind it are essential to the continued battle against transphobia and homophobia. I hope you will join me in endorsing the Transgender Day of Action.
