Obama bans discrimination against Transgender federal employees

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Lawyers in the Obama administration are currently drafting guidelines banning discrimination against Transgender federal employees. According to the New York Times:

The guidelines will be in an updated federal handbook for managers and supervisors to be distributed and posted online in the next couple of months, and they could also be included in other materials for managers. They will list transgender people — those who identify their gender differently from the information on their birth certificates — as among several groups protected by anti-discrimination laws.

On the heels of a horrifying Department of Justice brief upholding the homophobic Defense of Marriage Act, this is a great victory for all members of the LBGT community.

As a social worker who has delivered transgender inclusion trainings, I am ecstatic about the example this sets for other agencies. As a Transgender man who has faced hatred and discrimination, reading that the new administration is acknowledging part of my struggle means a lot to me.

Autumn Sandeen shares similar feelings as she recounts some of her experiences on Pam’s House Blend:

Gender identity and expression was not a protected class while I was working at the [Veterans' Association]. I could have been fired at any time for being transgender if my superiors determined that being transgender impeded me from doing my job effectively. Fortunately, that didn’t happen….So, this upcoming change in federal regulations feels very personal to me.

Obviously, winning this battle is only a part of the larger war against transphobia and homophobia. Let’s keep it going by helping Representative Barney Frank pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act that he has brought before Congress. Hasta la victoria, siempre! (Until victory, always)

The Republican Health Care Horror Show

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Given skyrocketing costs of medical coverage and the real life health risks facing Americans (like heart disease, diabetes and mental health illness), it blows my mind that conservatives working against a public health plan are able to scare people away from legitimate and effective health care reform with silly fantastical threats of “socialized medicine” and “rationed care.”

Unfortunately, Republicans and their fear-mongering aren’t going away.

Well…if you can’t beat ‘em…mock ‘em! That, apparently, is the approach adopted by Americans United for Change who created the video below that calls out (and pokes fun at) the pathetic attempts of republican (and some democratic) politicians to scare the American people out of health care reform that makes sense.

Don’t forget to take action to support a public health plan!

Immigrants speak for themselves, Fight Deportation and Negative Stereotyping in Mainstream Media

In sharp contrast to the misrepresentations of immigrants as social pariahs or downtrodden victims; Families for Freedom TV show (FFF-TV) is made by immigrants speaking for themselves. Mainstream media such as CNN and Fox broadcasts anti-immigrant propaganda 24 hours a day. FFF-TV serves as a place for immigrants to combat and transform the poisonous language and images of the current immigration debate.

The second episode dispels common myths about immigration. The show features street interviews with everyday people talking about immigration and a critical analysis of myths about immigration by Immigrant Rights activist Aarti Shahani.

“Rather than watch angry talking heads shouting people down and blaming immigrants for everything from the economy to terrorism; I’d rather hear people’s stories in their own words and hear the views of everyday people.” said Ravi Ragbir, FFF-TV producer.

FFF-TV’s production, which was made possible by a community media grant from Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN), comes from the heart of immigrant NYC and will feature the voices of affected people rather than professional talking heads. “Families for Freedom’s video project is an extremely valuable tool for communities of color and immigrants. Through the community media grant from MNN, they have put media making tools and resources into the hands of people who are affected by deportation and detention.  Their program is powerful and a great organizing and education tool,” said Betty Yu, of MNN’s Community Outreach and Media Department.

Future FFF-TV shows will dispel myths about immigrants and the economy, talk to families fighting deportation and hear from communities working to combat anti-immigrant initiatives.  The rhetoric of the anti-immigrant movement has clearly become mainstream. “We hear the same hateful words everywhere from mainstream TV to from the mouths of immigration judges themselves. We can’t over-estimate the effects of this constant hateful propaganda.  The time is now to undo the damage by telling our own stories” said Manisha Vaze, organizer with Families For Freedom.

FFF-TV Episode 2 airs this week on MNN in Manhattan the show will air on:
