Happy Birthday, Mom!

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Today is my Mom’s birthday. There are so many things to celebrate about her – her intelligence, work ethic, sense of humor and trustworthiness are only a few. But today on Action Left, I’d like to celebrate my Mom for her courage, activism and unwavering commitment to her family.

A couple weeks ago, my Mom wrote the following paragraph reflecting on activism surrounding the health care debate:

My son Jordan did another incredibly brave thing today.  He walked up to a group of demonstrators spouting preposterous propaganda designed to derail the health care reform effort in our country.  After listening to their disingenuous concerns for the welfare of others, he let them know how he feels about people scaring the elderly and less fortunate.  He told them about his grand parents and how these scare tactics were troubling them, scaring them into thinking that their health coverage may be canceled or rationed.  What kind of people scare others just to push their agenda and avoid change?  Who else?  The Party of No.  They’re no better than the scam artists who prey on the elderly.  Well Jordan told these jerks that scaring old people was not acceptable.  I am so proud of him and wish I had half of his courage.

Reading this paragraph really moved me. Not only because its so cool be supported as an activist by my parents, but also because its quite an honor to be considered courageous by my Mom, one of the bravest people I know. She has always stuck up for the people she loves, and as her Transgender son, this means the world to me. Her activism comes in many forms, sometimes as a letter to her Congressperson, but more often and most effectively, it comes in her personal interactions. It can’t be easy to hear your daughter tell you that actually, he’s a boy, but never for a second during my coming out process did i doubt that she had my back. When I came home from college for the first summer after staring my physical transition, she drove to my dentist’s office and told them in person that I was Trans and instructed them on how to be respectful. And, just the other day, she shared her experience about being the mother of a Trans person with someone who was so moved by her courage and compassion that he came out as the parent of a gay son!

Mom, you never cease to amaze me, and not a day goes by that I’m not grateful for you and our family. Thanks for contributing to Action Left and, most of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

What Action Will You Take This Week?

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

There has been a lot of great organizing and activism lately on the health care issue and we’ve got to keep it up, especially since the proposed bill unveiled by Senator Bauchus yesterday is pretty much a steamin’ pile of poo.

But there are a ton of other equally urgent issues that we can take action on right now! Here are three opportunities to get involved:

Senate Dem’s Reponse to Joe Wilson’s anti-Immigrant lies – an anti-immigrant health care proposal

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Lets see if i’ve got this right.

Start out with the goal of providing quality, affordable health care to all Americans. Good start.

Continue with the President addressing critics’ concerns about this plan to Congress. He finally calls out the manipulative lies of the Republicans. Great.

Next, one of these liars interrupts the President in the middle of his Congressional address, calling him a liar and dishonestly implying that Obama’s health care plan will give tax dollars to undocumented Americans (it won’t, which is its own fucked up issue). Flat-out disgusting.

Fast-forward a day or so and we have Obama’s Press Secretary and Congressional Democrats caving-in to the same guy who committed the un-precedented act of disrespect. They have now volunteered to add  a provision banning undocumented people from purchasing private health care with their own money in the newly-proposed insurance exchance. What the fucking fuck!

One minute, the President is delivering the smack down of his Presidency to Congress and the next minute the whole lot of them is rewarding anti-immigrant hate-mongers by legitimizing their bigoted persecution of immigrants and Brown people? What the hell happend!?!

As embarassing and pathetic as this cowardice is, we still have progressive legislators standing up for America and all its people. Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), a co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, had this to say about the Democrats shameful actions:

The senators are knee-jerking and over-reacting….Part of the problem with the Finance Committee bill is that it’s being done to appease people instead of being done to put something together.

I may have harsher words to say, but thats my prerogative as a snarky blogger. Representative Grijalva stepped up by speaking out against faux-liberal pandering to an opposition that is as uncooperative as it is impotent. Consider contributing Rep. Grijalva or visit this DailyKos diary to thank Representative Grijalva for his courage.

And for those of us not in his district, lets make sure to contact our own Representatives and Senators and let them know that giving into anti-immigrant, Obama-bashing bullies is not the behavior we expect from our elected officials.
