Obama Sues Arizona – Take Action!

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Today, the US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Arizona’s anti-immigrant law that usurps federal authority and encourages racial profiling. The government will most likely attempt to delay the implementation of the law, currently set for July 29, by seeking an injunction.

From HuffPo:

The government contends that the Arizona law violates the supremacy clause of the Constitution, a legal theory that says federal laws override state laws. It is already illegal under federal law to be in the country illegally, although the punishment and enforcement tactics of the Arizona are much more severe.

Other organizations have also filed suit, such as the ACLU, NAACP, MALDEF and APALC, who charge that, in addition to usurping Federal authority, the bill will lead to rampant racial profiling and violates the 1st and 4th amendments to the US Constitution.

The DOJ suit is great step forward, but we can’t stop there! As the President articulated last week, we need comprehensive immigration reform. Join Reform Immigration for America by sending a free fax to the President thanking him for taking action and encouraging him to keep up the pressure!

5 Ways to Celebrate the Fourth of July

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

From ColorLines:

It happens every year. Your progressive friends host the Fourth of July barbecue, where you eat too much carne puerco and grumble intermittently among yourselves about what crap this holiday is, how it’s all about nation-building and do you remember that piece by Howard Zinn on putting away the flags? Then you all agree that on the flipside it’s nice to have a day off or have gotten overtime. You open more Coronas and start talking about the bad news you just read on FaceBook that morning.

If you’re like me, this description is right-on. The question is, what other options are there? ColorLines suggests the following:

  1. Encourage Obama to stop deportations
  2. Support those hurt by BP
  3. Change your Facebook status to “I am Oscar Grant
  4. Enjoy dissing “The Last Airbender”
  5. Start planning your July 29 trip to Arizona
