Ethnic Studies Week

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Its not too late to participate in Ethnic Studies Week!

According to the Week’s coordinators:

Ethnic Studies Week October 1-7, 2010 is a nationally coordinated week of actions to defend ethnic studies and academic freedom. It was inspired by opposition to the May 11 passage of HB 2281 in Arizona banning ethnic studies in the AZ public schools and the May 21 passage of new social studies standards by the influential Texas State Board of Education.

Check out Ethnic Studies Week’s Resource Page for all kinds of links to videos, reading material and action opportunities. Learn about HB 2281 and the new Texas Social Studies standards, download free educational materials from Teach Tolerance,  and watch Tolteka’s “Manifest Destiny to Manifest Insanity” video below:

“A person is powerful with precious knowledge in their thoughts. We have a right to learn so won’t you stop burning books.”

This is an important message that each of us has not only a responsibility to share, but an interest in sharing. Our educational system is crumbling and along with it students’ motivation to learn and our instructors’ freedom to teach to their students rather than to a test. We all have an interest in motivating students to go to class and receive a comprehensive education that is relevant to their lives and their cultural histories.

But make no mistake. Ethnic Studies Programs are not only about defending the rights of marginalized students. Ultimately, these programs are about injecting legitimate history into curricula that have been whitewashed and sculpted to fit the cultural biases and political aspirations of a few twisted politicians, like the drafters of Arizona’s HB 2281 and the Texas State Board of Education.

DREAM Activists Risk Deportation – Support Their Struggle!

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

From The Dream Team:

[On] July 20th, over 20 immigrant youth from all over the country are risking arrest and deportation to stage sit-ins at various congressional offices in Washington D.C. in order to urge congressional leadership to take action and pass the DREAM Act, a narrowly-tailored, bipartisan bill which would grant immigrant youth a path to citizenship.

After two months of coast-to-coast actions, including dozens of sit-ins, civil disobedience actions, and protracted hunger strikes by both undocumented youth and community members, they have decided to bring the cause of their lives to Washington D.C. The immigrant youth participating in today’s action hail from Illinois, Virginia, New York, California, Arizona, Kansas, Missouri, and Michigan.

Support the immigrant youth who are risking everything- call your Senator right now and demand the DREAM Act.

These students are fighting for the chance to go college in the country in which they have spent most of their lives. We must not let bigotry and flawed immigration policy stand in their way!

Please join me in calling the Senate switchboard at (202) 224-3121.  Say what state you’re from, and they’ll connect you to the Senate office. You can use the script below:

Hi, my name is ___ I’m from the state of _____ and I’m calling to ask Senator _____ to do whatever it takes to pass the DREAM Act.  Thanks!

While you’re at it, take a minute to sign the Reform Immigration for America petition in support of the DREAM Act!

We are only weeks away from the Senate’s August recess, which means we don’t have much time. The time is now. We can’t wait any longer.

Obama Sues Arizona – Take Action!

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Today, the US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Arizona’s anti-immigrant law that usurps federal authority and encourages racial profiling. The government will most likely attempt to delay the implementation of the law, currently set for July 29, by seeking an injunction.

From HuffPo:

The government contends that the Arizona law violates the supremacy clause of the Constitution, a legal theory that says federal laws override state laws. It is already illegal under federal law to be in the country illegally, although the punishment and enforcement tactics of the Arizona are much more severe.

Other organizations have also filed suit, such as the ACLU, NAACP, MALDEF and APALC, who charge that, in addition to usurping Federal authority, the bill will lead to rampant racial profiling and violates the 1st and 4th amendments to the US Constitution.

The DOJ suit is great step forward, but we can’t stop there! As the President articulated last week, we need comprehensive immigration reform. Join Reform Immigration for America by sending a free fax to the President thanking him for taking action and encouraging him to keep up the pressure!
