Don’t Get Caught in a Bad Hotel

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

The Westin St. Francis in San Francisco is a bad hotel and Sleep with the Right People wants to make sure we don’t get caught there until they grant their workers fair contracts and affordable health care.

Sleep with the Right People is a coalition of LBGT folks and UNITE HERE, a union representing over 300,000 hospitality and manufacturing workers across North America.

Recently, the coalition spread the word about the worker-initiated boycott of the Westin St. Francis with a flash mob parody song called “Bad Hotel,” based on Lady Gaga’s hit song “Bad Romance.” Check out the video below:

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what “good” activism is. Direct action and other forms of public protest are essential to drawing attention to invisible or poorly understood issues and igniting the passion of others for the cause. As activists, we have a rich and proud history of marches and protests and occupations and yet sometimes others use this history to justify tuning us out before our message reaches them (an ‘if i’ve seen one protest, I’ve seen them all’ mentality).

Well, a mob of people dancing, singing, and playing instruments in the middle of a hotel lobby to the tune of a song that almost everyone knows is a good way to dodge that mentality and get people’s attention. The added bonus of performance is that it can come off as less threatening than a march or a ‘teach-in.’

American Family Association: Promoting Bigotry Since 1977

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Earlier this week, Brian Fischer of the American Family Association had these words to say about Muslim-Americans:

The most compassionate thing we can do for Muslims who have already immigrated here is to help repatriate them back to Muslim countries, where they can live in a culture which shares their values, a place where they can once again be at home, surrounded by people who cherish their deeply held ideals. Why force them to chafe against the freedom, liberty and civil rights we cherish in the West? … Those who are willing to convert to Christianity and renounce Islam, Allah, Mohammed and the Koran may be welcomed, for they can become not just good Christians but true Americans. (From Media Matters)

Convert or get out? I didn’t know we had added this clause to the First Amendment.

The American Family Association is also virulently homophobic and tireless in its attacks on women’s reproductive freedom. America’s diverse communities may not be united under a common quest for freedom and equality, but we certainly have a common enemy in the AFA.

American College of Pediatricians is a Homophobic Farce

Friday, April 9th, 2010

In 2002, a small group of homophobic pediatricians defected from the American Academy of Pedatrics after it adopted a resolution in support of gay parents. These unethical practitioners then founded the American College of Pediatrics, which is not actually a college at all, but an anti-LBGT activist organization whose board is made up of a significant number of anti-gay, anti-trans activists from the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality.

In March of this year, the ACP sent a letter to every Superintendent of every US school district citing non-existent studies or misinterpreting data in an attempt to “prove” that a) people are not born Queer or Trans and thus, b) LBGT youth can be “fixed” with corrective therapy.

This is utter nonsense and incredibly dangerous. Medical practitioners are in a unique position to influence public opinion and school policy in powerful ways because of their status as “experts.”

The hacks behind ACP are not experts. They are a group of anti-gay, anti-trans activists making up statistics or perverting legitimate science for their own hate-filled agendas.

A friend of mine recently said that half of activism is being informed, and I completely agree.

The ACP is trying to sabotage Queer and Trans youth by spreading misinformation, so its up to us to be informed and keep others informed.

Although I’m not psyched about the American Psychological Association’s classification of Transgender existence as a psychological disorder, they have compiled a real resource guide for schools that accurately cites real studies and encourages schools to support their LBGT students.

From the APA’s Just the Facts resource guide:

The idea that homosexuality is a mental disorder or that the emergence of same-sex attraction and orientation among some adolescents is in any way abnormal or mentally unhealthy has no support among any mainstream health and mental health organizations.

Consider taking action by presenting your local school officials with the APA’s resource guide to combat the ACP’s anti-LBGT propaganda!
