Obama bans discrimination against Transgender federal employees

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Lawyers in the Obama administration are currently drafting guidelines banning discrimination against Transgender federal employees. According to the New York Times:

The guidelines will be in an updated federal handbook for managers and supervisors to be distributed and posted online in the next couple of months, and they could also be included in other materials for managers. They will list transgender people — those who identify their gender differently from the information on their birth certificates — as among several groups protected by anti-discrimination laws.

On the heels of a horrifying Department of Justice brief upholding the homophobic Defense of Marriage Act, this is a great victory for all members of the LBGT community.

As a social worker who has delivered transgender inclusion trainings, I am ecstatic about the example this sets for other agencies. As a Transgender man who has faced hatred and discrimination, reading that the new administration is acknowledging part of my struggle means a lot to me.

Autumn Sandeen shares similar feelings as she recounts some of her experiences on Pam’s House Blend:

Gender identity and expression was not a protected class while I was working at the [Veterans' Association]. I could have been fired at any time for being transgender if my superiors determined that being transgender impeded me from doing my job effectively. Fortunately, that didn’t happen….So, this upcoming change in federal regulations feels very personal to me.

Obviously, winning this battle is only a part of the larger war against transphobia and homophobia. Let’s keep it going by helping Representative Barney Frank pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act that he has brought before Congress. Hasta la victoria, siempre! (Until victory, always)

Green Jobs for People and the Planet

Monday, May 18th, 2009

jones2NPR recently interviewed the Obama Administration’s special advisor for green jobs, Van Jones. Listen to it here.

If he stays true to his word, Jones intends to use his position to combat environmental destruction and poverty together, using the $40 billion in the recovery package set aside for clean and efficient energy and job training to create what he calls a “green collar job” or a “blue collar job thats been upgraded or upskilled to better respect the environment.” According to Jones:

You want to think about jobs that are good for an individual’s wealth — in other words they pay well, but they’re also good for the community and the planet’s health.

Jones, who seems to be into word play, also says he wants to “green the ghetto”

When you think about green, you often think about people who have a lot of money and who can afford a certain lifestyle. But really, what the green economy represents is a massive opportunity for new work, new wealth and better health for all Americans. There is an opportunity here to take the very people who need work the most and connect them with the work that most needs to be done.

Now THIS approach makes sense, although I do take issue with the last sentence of that quote. The people who need work the most already have a history of doing the much of the work that most needs to be done. But, what this represents is an opportunity to value the work and people performing the work by paying wages that honor their labor and recognizing the vital role that working class Americans (including non-citizens) play in this country.

There are, of course, many opportunities for the overall goal of the “green jobs” approach to be sabotaged by politicians and corporate interests who prioritize corporate greed over worker and environmental health, and we need to speak out against them!. But, its a great sign that the person Obama picked to advise him on the issue is taking such a common sense, holistic approach to saving the environment and creating jobs.

One more cool thing about Van Jones – he wants you to get involved. Check out his website Green for All to “take a stand for people and the planet” by creating your own “green jobs icon

April 15 “Tea Parties” – The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Friday, April 17th, 2009

The Good:

Stephen Colbert had a hilarious segment mocking the tea baggers:

The Bad:

Its 11pm and I’d like to get to bed before dawn, so I don’t have time to write such a long list. But the logic behind the entire concept of a “tea party” to protest Obama’s tax policy and “wasteful” government spending during a recession is, well, bad. In fact, the logic is “Pretzelish” according to an NPR article about the attempt to connect the Boston Tea Party of 1773 with the conservative “tea parties” held yesterday.

The politics are wrongheaded …. The [Boston Tea Party] … was not a protest against big government. It was a protest against England’s refusal to allow the United States to govern itself at all. Now that the U.S. has sovereignty and is able to govern itself, a tea party protest is pretzelish in its logic. “The people who were involved in the Boston Tea Party were protesting because they had no representation. These people have representation,” says Benjamin Woods Labaree, a retired historian in Amesbury, Mass., and author of The Boston Tea Party. The contemporary protest, he says, “is totally irrelevant. There is no connection.”

Perhaps worse than the poor logic is the fact that a lot of the folks attending these rallies are legitmately suffering during the recession, and are being lied to by Fox News, Sean Hannity, and now the Governor of Texas. The folks complaining that Obama is stealing their money and oppressively raising their taxes are apparently unaware that unless you make $250,000 a year or more, you receive a tax decrease, and that the “wasteful government spending” is helping to build infrastructure, create jobs and fund education, all things that, I’m assuming, are important to the tea baggers and will most certainly benefit them.

So, to sum up, the only good thing about the tax day tea party protests was…a 3 minute and 40 second segment on Comedy Central mocking them.
