Celebrating and Moving Forward

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Victory is ours! Last night, the US House of Representatives passed historic Health Insurance Reform legislation that will extend health coverage to 30 million people and amounts to the largest increase in the social safety net since Medicare. The bill now has to be passed by the Senate before can be signed by the President, both of which we can expect to happen soon.

As monumental as this accomplishment is, the problems of this country are such that we can’t spend much time celebrating before we move onto other equally urgent and important issues.

In addition to being accompanied by an Executive Order barring public funding for abortions, the Health Care bill will almost certainly bar undocumented Immigrants from purchasing insurance in the exchange with their own money. This is not simply an isolated injustice, but a mere microcosm of the outrageous persecution facing immigrants in this country today.

It is not a coincidence that, on the same day the House passed historic social justice legislation, hundreds of thousands of Americans marched on Washington to demand reform of our broken and inhumane immigration system.

The Democrats made a tactical decision to brush immigrant justice issues aside in order to pass Health Insurance Reform. They now owe the Immigrant community big time and need to deliver on the overdue promise to tackle the injustice in our Immigration system.

The President said yesterday that he would do “everything in [his] power” to get a deal this year:

“You know as well as I do that this won’t be easy, and it won’t happen overnight,” Obama added. “But if we work together across ethnic, state and party lines, we can build a future worthy of our history as a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws.”

GOP Does Not Take National Security Seriously

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Anyone still holding onto the delusion that the Republican Party is genuinely concerned about national security need only look to the recent antics of Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) to know the ugly truth.

DeMint is blocking the confirmation of a Transportation Security Administration Administrator because of a question about nominee Errol Southers’ position on collective-bargaining.

Let’s reflect. On Christmas Day, a flight bound for Detroit, Michigan was almost blown up with explosive chemicals and 300 lives were nearly lost. Our President is behaving respectfully and appropriately, admitting that it was a “systemic failure” and taking steps to assess and then fix the problem.

Republicans like DeMint, on the other hand, are using it as an opportunity to gain political ground by criticizing the President for his word choices and forcing the country to go without a director of the TSA – the agency responsible for flight safety and security.

Americans who are serious about the safety of this country support the ethical and efficient operation of the agencies designed to protect us and the leadership of a President who will take the situation – and our lives – seriously.

Join Organizing for America In the Fight for Real Health Care Reform!

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

On Wednesday, I joined a group of about 15 of my neighbors at a phone bank event sponsored by Organizing for America, the grassroots network dedicated to mobilizing support President Obama’s policy initiatives. Armed with our cell phones and a friendly greeting, we called other voters in our district and encouraged them to contact their Senators and Representatives in support of the President’s Health Care Reform agenda with a strong public option.

Events like this happened around the country yesterday, with astounding results. According to a representative from OFA California,

Supporters across the country  tallied over 300,000 calls to Congress that were either placed or committed to in a single day. Congressional staffers said they had never seen anything like it and that our efforts made a difference.

Considering that the original goal was to have 100,000 calls into Congress, OFA really kicked some ass!

I had a wonderful experience. There is something really special about communicating with someone you’ve never met before, connecting on an issue like health care that you both care about, and giving them the information and the encouragement they need to take action to help create change.

So, I encourage everyone to get involved with Organizing for America or any other grassroots organization working to guarantee affordable health care access for all. The time for action is now and with tools like the internet, cell phones and a well-organized grassroots campaign, making a difference has never been easier.

As President Obama said,

I’m asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington…I’m asking you to believe in yours.
