Reviving The Left Cover

Dwight Furrow is Professor of Philosophy at San Diego Mesa College in San Diego, CA. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from University of California, Riverside.

Furrow’s specialty is ethics and he is the author of many books and articles in moral philosophy. He resolutely avoided writing on politics until after the 2004 presidential election when he decided America’s cult of stupidity had gone too far and he was under a moral imperative to make sense of American values. The outcome of that decision is Reviving the Left: The Need to Restore Liberal Values in America.

Furrow has devoted considerable attention to making philosophy accessible to non-specialists and general interest readers. He says, “philosophy’s job is to clarify our beliefs and help us understand their meaning and significance. There is no reason why that task should be confined to the ivory tower.” Readers should find Reviving the Left to be accessible, sometimes entertaining, and hopefully, enlightening.

Ethics: Key Concepts in Philosophy

Western philosophy has always placed questions of ethics - of how to live well - centre stage. Ethics: Key Concepts in Philosophy is the ideal introduction to the subject. It offers thorough analysis and explication of six core concepts in moral philosophy: agency; reason; happiness; obligation; character; responsibility.

The book covers all the major moral theories to have emerged from the Western tradition, and pays close attention to those philosophers who have made significant contributions to ethics. In addition to the six central themes, the text also discusses such key topics in ethics as relativism, egoism, naturalism, autonomy, objectivity, religion and integrity.

Against Theory: Continental & Analytic Challenges in Moral PhilosophyAgainst Theory

Against Theory is a remarkable synthesis of both the continental and analytical philosophical traditions around the subject of morality. Its singularity lies in its analysis of the implications postmodernism has had on ethics. Against Theory’s main theme is an analysis of the degree to which contemporary movements in moral philosophy explain the idea of universal moral agency.
